Sega Classics in 3D, the best WWE US Title matches, and a scary Santa hit (Amazon) store shelves with this week’s roundup of the leading online retailers’ top new releases!
Wow, we’re already in the last week of April? I guess after drinking our sorrows during the tax deadline and going in the green for 4/20, this month just flew by. Still, this month has plenty more to go, including the fan-voted Monday Night Movie, and these fantastic new releases! There’s a new Pokeman, the best Sega games ever in 3D, and some pretty alluring Blu-rays! Even if you’re not up for one of these products, clicking any Laser Time Amazon link will send some cents back to your boys here at Laser Time industries. Also, if you buy the physical edition of any game listed here during launch week and have Amazon Prime, you’re gonna get a sweet 20% discount. Now, onto the vidjagarms and moviefilmz!
Sega 3D Classics Collection
What’s better than nine great Sega games? How about nine great Sega games… in 3D! Spanning the Genesis, the Master System, and Arcades, every one of these classics has been remastered to play in 3D. The Sega classics that have already hit 3DS have already earned critical acclaim for their impressive new visuals, and there are two games in the collection that have never been available on the 3DS before! This batch of classics is an even better value if you have Amazon Prime and score 20% off the compilation.
Pokemon Rumble World
Nintendo has made some pretty engaging free-to-play games, but wouldn’t be great if you could just pay up front and get everything? While we wait for Puzzle Arcade and Miitomo to give us badges and clothes in one thirty buck chunk, at least there’s Pokemon Rumble World, a top-down action game where you can battle and collect Pokemon and even directly control them. Normally, you’d have to pay in dollar increments for access to Pokemon until Nintendo has hundreds of your hard-earned dollars, but you get the whole kit and kaboodle and Pikachu for one low price that can be made 20% cheaper if you’re an Amazon Prime member!
Tales From The Borderlands
While Telltale game series are always quality, every so often a season stands above the rest. It started with The Walking Dead, it happened again with The Wolf Among Us, and most recently, Tales from the Borderlands also managed to transcend its source material and stand as a great story all its own. The story of former coroporate stooge Rhys and con-artist Fiona attempting to get rich and start new lives, all while on the run from Hyperion and the ghost of Handsome Jack has a surprising amount of emotion and a not-so-surprising funny robots. You can also get this great Telltalle game, immortalized on disc on other platforms, like Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, and you’ll pay 20% percent less Hyperion Credits if you’re an Amazon Prime member!
Stranger of Sword City
It wouldn’t be a week of new releases without a Vita-exclusive JRPG. This time around, it’s Stranger of Sword City, a dungeon-crawler that previously called consoles home when released in Japan. Now, it’s come to the US on Vita, and you can enjoy the Gauntlet-esque gameplay (featuring multiple combat classes and dozens of dungeon floors filled with numerous baddies) on the go. Getting a physical edition of a JRPG on Vita is already a good deal, but you can make friends with this stranger for 20% less if you have an Amazon Prime subscription.
Ride Along 2
Buddy cop movies can be an iffy proposition, but the first Ride Along became successful due to the incomporable Kevin Hart and a great straight man (Ice Cube) to play off of. The second one continues the ride with Hart and Cube teaming up (this time as equals) to solve another crime. It’s harmless fun and Kevin Hart is hilarious as always, and RA2’s success means we have to be close to a buddy cop crossover with Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock, right?
The US Championship: A Legacy of Greatness
As the only current title in WWE that has origins outside of the company, the US Title sometimes gets the short shrift in comparison to WWE’s own middle-tier Intercontinental Championship. After a 2015 renaissance, the belt is further celebrated with The US Championship: A Legacy of Greatness, which showcases the history of the belt going back to belt’s NWA origins with bouts featuring the likes of Ricky Steamboat and Lex Luger, moving on to the title’s transition to WWE, and onto international competitors who used the title to espouse their anti-American views. There’s also a few matches from John Cena’s great weekly US Open Challenge from 2015, and even though can be found on the WWE Network, there’s plenty of old-school bouts not yet on the streaming service that should make this compilation worth your while.
Krampus
With the popularity of Christmas horror movies and the Krampus concept, it’s a bit shocking that it took until 2015 for the anti-Santa to become the centerpiece of a slasher movie. With a more pleasing premise than Silent Night, Deadly Night and a far better cast than Santa’s Slay (sorry, Goldberg), Krampus has the potential to be a future Christmas mainstay. Plus, any time Adam Scott signs on for a horror flick, you know it’s going to be good, so fans of Pirhana 3D should have hope that this Blu-ray will arrive in their stocking. Or you can buy it now and not have to wait eight months.
Miyazaki fans should not miss this sale!
The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki
Hayao Miyazaki is the most celebrated animator of the last 50 years, and for good reason. Films like My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Princess Mononoke are some of the most fully realized worlds ever shown in theaters, capturing the hearts of people from just about every age and part of the planet. Now that he’s retired, Amazon has an exquisite looking special collection of every feature length film Miyazaki directed all in one box set. Plus, there are some fantastic bonuses as well that will likely justify the price. Currently it’s less than $180, which is a fucking STEAL. If you love animation, BUY THIS.
