Raw airs for three hours every week, but fear not, we’ve watched the whole thing and picked the part you need to seek out. Read on to find out The Coolest Thing on Raw Last Night!
Welcome to a new post-wrestling show article series that plucks out the best part of the biggest rasslin programs. With so many hours of content on TV each week (5 prime time WWE hours and one each for NXT and Lucha Underground), it can sometimes be difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff. That’s where The Coolest Thing on Raw Last Night (or CTORLN) comes in. We pluck out the best part and tell you exactly why it’s so awesome.
CHYNA’S TRIBUTE VIDEO
There’s no two ways around it; the relationship between Chyna and the WWE has been very complicated for the last decade and a half. She was all but disavowed due to her post- wrestling career issues and WWE saw few benefits to bring her back into the fold. That said, the tribute which interspersed her ground-breaking moments (the first woman in the Royal Rumble, the only woman Intercontinental Champion) with condolences offered by WWE’s top stars and alumni was a nice touch. It’s not quite the music video tribute that the likes of Roddy Piper and The Warrior got, but it’s way more than we expected. Hopefully there’s more accolades to come around Hall of Fame season next year.
AJ STYLES VS SHEAMUS
The undercard for much of this week’s Raw had a common theme of smaller underdogs trying to outfox bigger brutes. There was the in-ring debut of Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows, who put on a good match with the Usos, but the dynamic worked better with AJ Styles and Sheamus. While Sheam-o is bigger than The Pheonomenal One, he’s still the right size to make Styles’ strikes look strong, and the Brogue Kick rope counter-to-Phenomenal Punch sequence at the end of the video above is below-the-radar awesome. It probably won’t make any highlight reels, but I liked it.
THE BEST PART OF RAW LAST NIGHT:
SAMI ZAYN VS RUSEV
While it’s a little sad to see The League of Nations look even more inept than usual as they went 0-3 this week, Sami Zayn vs Rusev was a pretty good example of this pretty good Raw. Even if it wasn’t a match of the year contender, it was still a fresh matchup (somehow these two never tangled in NXT) with a good story to tell. For all of Rusev’s cereal-kicking, he’s still one of WWE’s strongest dudes, and even in a loss, he looked boss. Lana back by his side was a nice reset, and this match featured some pretty good feats of strength by the Bulgarian Brute. In the end, Sami got a surprise victory that established some momentum for Zayn after weeks of singles losses, and between this bout, the pre-match video recapping Zayn and Kevin Owens’ relationship, and the post-match Owens appearance, I’m unexpectedly hyped up for Payback this weekend.
