PlayStation Trophies – How Many People Actually Complete Their Games?

laser-time-playstation-trophies

While the general fervor surrounding Xbox Achievements and PlayStation Trophies has settled down since their late-’00s heyday, it’s still fun to take a look at these meta-challenges before putting a game away forever.

What interests me the most these days, however, is how the PSN trophies have a “rarity” based on the percentage of people who’ve actually obtained them. It’s a lot of fun to look at your own trophy list and go, “oh hey, I did this thing that only 10% of other players did, I am great at games and life, go me.”

The most interesting info I get from this though, is the percentage / rarity for “beat the game” trophies. Not beating the game on the hardest difficulty, not obtaining the Platinum Trophy, but just the basic “I beat the game” reward. As someone who tends to finish just about every game I play, it’s amazing to see how low some of these completion percentages are!

Below is a list of numerous games I could cross reference with my own friends list. It’s hardly comprehensive and several games have “hidden” trophies that make the completion trophy invisible to those who haven’t obtained it, but this should still be a fun read.

Alien: Isolation – Ripley, Signing Off – 17.7%

Batman: Arkham Knight – Master of Fear – 43.5%

BioShock Infinite – Saw the Elephant – 25.2%

Bloodborne – Yharnam Sunrise (13.9%) Honoring Wishes (18.9%) Childhood’s Beginning (19.9%)

Call of Duty: Black Ops III – Full Circle – 2.4% (Hardened, Veteran, or Realistic)

Danganronpa – All’s Well That Ends… Umm… – 54.2%

Danganronpa 2 – Goodbye Academy of Despair – 58.9% (the highest % of anything in my list. Not surprising, as I assume most folks who dipped into a visual novel sequel are committed to seeing it through)

Dead Space 2 – Made Us Whole – 38%

Dead Space Extraction – Survivor – 13.6%

Demon’s Souls – World Uniter’s Trophy – 19.6%

Devil May Cry 4 SE – Easy Does It – 17.5%

DmC: Devil May Cry – The End? Don’t Bet On It – 39.1%

Doom – Knee-Deep in the Dead – 18.2%

Dragon Age: Inquisition – Doom Upon All the World – 23.8%

Earth Defense Force 4.1 – A Walk in the Park (Ranger, 3.5%), Winging It (Wing Diver, 2.7%), Clearing the Air (Air Raider, 1.1%), Fencing Scholar (Fencer, 0.9%)

The Evil Within – Another Day on the Job – 10.3%

Fallout 4 – Prepared for the Future – 27.6%

Final Fantasy XIII – Instrument of Change – 27.9%

Infamous – Good Finish (23.1%), Evil Finish (15.2%)

infamous First Light – She’s Ready – 33.2%

LA Noire – Moth to a Flame – 24.3%

The Last of Us – No Matter What – 31.1%

Life is Strange – Polarized – 40.4%

Mega Man 10 – WHOMP WILY! – 15.3%

Mega Man Legacy Collection – Rock and Roll (13%) The Mystery of Dr Wily (16.4%) The End of Dr Wily?! (9.7%) A New Ambition! (7.2%) Proto Man’s Trap (5.9%) The Greatest Battle Ever! (5.4%)

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor – The Hand is Severed – 37%

Persona 4 Golden – Breaking Through the Fog – 12.5%

Resident Evil 6 PS4 – Normal is Good – 9.1%

Shadow of the Colossus – Final Colossus – 19.7%

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time – Home Sick – 32.1%

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – Win – 2.9%

Tearaway – You Have 1 New Message – 38.2%

Titan Souls – Titan Soul – 18.3%

Transformers: War for Cybertron – Autobot Commander (15.1%) Deception Seeker (20.3%)

Uncharted 2 – Charted! Normal – 35.5%

Uncharted 3 – Charted! Normal – 27%

Uncharted 4 – Charted! Moderate – 30.9%

Velocity 2X – Mind Over Matter – 2.3%

Witcher 3 – Passed the Trial – 27.4%

I’m not completely familiar with every game in the list, so if I isolated the wrong “basic ending” trophy just make a note below. PLUS if you can eyeball any hidden trophies (Souls III? FFXIII-2?) and lemme know that too, that would be fun.

But yeah, it’s just kinda neat to see which games drive people away before they’re over, and which games lure at least 50% of their audience to see things through. It’s also interesting to consider sales numbers, so like Uncharted 4 having a 30% completion rate means more people finished it than say, Danganronpa 2. I think??

  1. Do you have a percentage for the Truth trophy in Metal Gear Solid 5 (its the hidden trophy for beating the game)? As good as the game is, I can’t imagine it has a large percentage.

  2. I love looking at the easiest trophies – stuff like “complete prologue” or, occasionally, stuff you basically just get for starting the game – and seeing how low they are. It’s not as low as these completion trophies, of course, but it’s crazy how many people buy these games and basically never start them.

  3. It’s interesting to see at what point the percentages drop, too. Sometimes I’m surprised that the rarity is in the 60s until three fourths of the way through, then drops off. Arkham Knight had a really high percentage a long way in for mission trophies.

The PS Plus free games are what really skew the trophy percentages, even I will download and start a game just to see the trophy list, and see if there are any I can get super easily, but never really play the game.

  4. I try and try and try to finish games, however unless im enjoying it immensely, odds are i get about 50-60% done. Games Ive finished in the past 2 years – tomb raider, infamous second son, Wolfenstein, and that might be all. to be finished – msg5, diablo 3, valk. chronicles, ratchet and clank

  5. Great article Brett! Glad to know there is someone out there who is more interested with rarity than the actual trophies.

Semi humorous side story, Bloodborne is one of my favorite games in the last 5-10 years. I’ve done everything you can do in it. I’ve probably spent 300+ hours in the game. Towards the end of the first year, the hardest to get trophy (Killing the queen in the dungeons) was only around 2%. I was constantly on Gamefaqs asking questions in order to increase my understanding of how the game worked. 90% of the replies were always “git gud”. I understand there are a lot of trolls on Gamefaqs but that was quite annoying. Git gud? Out of millions of people who have played this game, I’m among the 2% who have done the hardest thing in it! That number is probably halved if you only counted the people that solo’ed the whole game. Which I did!!

OK, maybe that was more of an annoying side story but I’m so glad that the rarity was there. It really shows you how many people talk shit on the internet.

    1. Your side story is why I pretty much stick to the fextralife wikis because almost any question I have will have it’s answer there, and the chat room there seems to usually have pretty helpful people. Pretty much my go-to for any Dark Souls III info recently.

  6. I’m looking at just my games on ps4 of the ones that can be beaten (excluding stuff like Jackbox Party games) and psn monthly freebies

    I am 12 of 39 31% of my ps4 games I have beat

  7. For DSIII there are three ending trophies and their rarity percentages are 29.5%, 23.2%, and 16.8%. So most likely skewed right now towards the easiest to get ending but there’s no way to say how much is from multiple playthroughs and how much is variation between which ending people achieved first.

I also never did finish Demons’ Souls despite getting probably around 85% completion. I know we’re not getting any new Souls games but I think a Demons’ remaster would make a lot of sense because it was overlooked by most because Dark was their real breakout success, and even then the series wasn’t as accepted in the mainstream as it is now. Just bring up the visuals a bit, and bring in some tweaks that the more recent Souls games perfected, like crystal lizards that don’t despawn forever if you don’t catch them in time. I’d go back and finish my PS3 file if I thought my system could take it and my controllers didn’t feel like mush after almost a decade of wear.

  8. I’ve always thought that this would be a good quiz style section for an episode of lasertime. I always look at percentages for my trophies. I’m always surprised to see how few people make it past the tutorial part of games. Seeing a 60% rate for completing the tutorial always makes me wonder why people even bought the game. Also the Souls series always has a very high platinum rate even though they have a reputation for being hard the fans like to put in the work.

  9. I don’t tend to delete a game from my hard drive until I’ve finished it, with the exception of when I was a PC gamer.
I can’t imagine buying a game I didn’t want to finish, so I can understand not completing all of them. Then again, I finished the unfished swan and that was a ps plus title. Ironic.

  10. Glad to see this fascinates others than just me. I’m like you – I don’t really “just stop” playing a game until I finish the main story. Usually even if the game is a bit of a disappointment I try to see it through because I feel there’s always SOMETHING unique about the game worth walking away with. Anyways – Here’s a list of everything I’ve got to add to your list. Mix of PS4, PS3, and Vita games. Formatted by…
