This week in ’87, Fraggle Rock ends with a touching finale, then in 1997 the Nintendo 64 gets the best destruction-based game of all time as the Power Rangers hit theaters for a second time. 2007 sees the end of HBO’s Rome and Will Ferrell’s Blades of Glory.

3/25/87 – NBC airs the special “Down and Out with Donald Duck,” a mockumentary about Donald Duck’s fall from grace and attempt to get rehired by Disney
3/27/87 – On CBS, The Price Is Right surpasses Concentration as the longest-running daytime game show in history.
3/29/87 – WrestleMania 3 takes place in the Pontiac SIlverdome, with the epic main-event match between Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant that included the iconic image of Hogan bodyslamming the 500-plus pound Giant. Also of note is the technical classic between Macho Man Randy Savage and Ricky The Dragon Steamboat, which has been an inspiration for smaller wrestlers for years. WWE claimed attendance of 93,173, the highest-ever indoor attendance at the time, which wouldn’t be surpassed in general until the 2010 NBA All Star Game and by the WWE until WrestleMania 32.
3/30/87 – The final episode of Fraggle Rock airs after five seasons and 96 episodes. Entitled “Change of Address,”” the description reads “Having finally met, Gobo and Doc want to get to know each other. But this proves difficult, because Doc and Sprocket are moving away.”

3/29/87 – The TV movie “A Stranger Waits” airs, featuring an intense promo with A VERY FAMILIAR LOGO

3/24/97 – Billy Crystal hosts the 69th Academy Awards. The English Patient won Best Picture, Best DIrector (Anthony Minghella), Best Supporting Actress (Juliette Binoche), Best Score, Best Sound, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Costume and Best Editing. Other awards of note are Geoffrey Rush winning Best Actor for Shine, Frances McDormand winning Best Actress for Fargo, Cuba Gooding Jr winning best Supporting Actor for Jerry Maguire, and Independence Day winning best visual effects.
3/26/97 – Smart Guy debuts on The WB, starring Taj Mowry (the little brother of the Sister Sister sisters) as a genius child who goes to high school with his older siblings. It would last three seasons and 51 episodes.
Vandal Hearts – Konami SRPG, seven classes that have a rock-paper-scissors relationship, before FFT or modern things like Disgaea so it really stood out
Ballblazer Champions – Factor 5, LucasArts update to C64 / Atari 80s game
Toshinden 3 – had a 60fps mode, got rid of ring outs and you could now juggle foes. Played this once despite diving whole hog into 1 and 2

Blast Corps! Another Rare classic, on N64, one of the greatest games of all time. Amazing premise, starts small with construction equipment and within an hour you are piloting a gymnast robot that backflips through buildings

3/25: Rome finale on HBO – The series features a sprawling cast of characters, many of whom are based on real figures from historical records, but the lead protagonists are ultimately two soldiers named Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo, who find their lives intertwined with key historical events.
3/24/07 – Peyton Manning hosts SNL, one of the better jock hosts of SNL, up there with Charles Barkley. One great (though not good for audio) skit features Manning and Will Forte trying to psych up a basketball team with an inspirational song (which turns out to be the cheesy “Casino Royale,” by Herb Alpert) that turns into an interpretive dance. It’s basically WIll Forte dancing like a goof while everyone behind him tries not to corpse laughing.
3/25/07 – Surreal Life Fame Games ends – A spinoff of Surreal Life, it featured the likes of Chyna, Verne Troyer, Ron Jeremy, Vanilla Ice, and others taking part in different competitions to win money. Traci Bingham, a former Baywatch cast member, won the $100,000 Goldenpalace.net Grand Prize
3/28/07 – The LOST episode “Expose” airs, killing off unpopular characters Nikki and Paulo. The duo were introduced at the beginning of season 3, positing that the background characters who appeared on the island had stories to tell, too. The fans complained, so this episode killed the duo off (by having them buried alive when temporarily paralyzed), but not before revealing that they had inadvertently discovered many of the island’s secrets before the cast did (like the Hatch and the Nigerian heroin-smuggling plane).
3/30/07 – Final Celebrity Deathmatch airs After running from 1998-2002 and then getting revived in June of 2006, the final episode featured Barry Bonds vs MLB commissioner Bud Selig, Anna Kournikova vs Danica Patric, and Jackass’ Chris Pontius against famed wheelchair athlete Mark Zupan
