Vidjagame Apocalypse 209 – Mascots Riding Mascots

It’s always fun when someone appears on VGA for the first time, and this week, longtime community member and Anime Streaming Showcase creator Curtis “zabu_san” Stone joins us for a very serious discussion of mascots who habitually carry their partners around on their backs, operating in a state of perpetual symbiosis that you probably thought was totally normal for animals or elves or whatever. The topic was, of course, inspired by this week’s release of Yooka-Laylee, which headlines our new releases chat along with Mr. Shifty. It’s all we can do to squeeze in some quick Scorpio talk, after which we look at a few dreams you’ve had about games.

Question of the Week
Which two game mascots would you like to see work together?

  1. Yooka-Layle is bizarrely divisive… in a weird way it’s almost refreshing aka not heaps of praise OR hate for a change. Personally, I’m enjoying it quite a lot, I’m personally not having an issue with the camera, not getting lost or confused where to go next (at least not for long) and like the characters HOWEVER yes they need to shut up and not every joke lands (and that has nothing to do with British humor, trust me on that), also F*** THAT FATASS CLOUD, the first race that you guys streamed was a cakewalk for me but the next race AAAAHH!!! That said, all in all I’m not seeing many of issues people are raising but find it fascinating and by all means believe them that they have a problem when they bring it up. Like i said, weirdly refreshing because it’s fun to talk about it!

    1. I remember dreading many of Rare’s races from their older platforms. There was one in Coocoo land(?) I think it was a bird man, had to tap the bottom to go faster. -_-

I am interested in this one all the same, but with so many games (like Zelda) out it’ll have to wait.

  2. Technically speaking you could let characters “ride” each other back in DkC 3. One press off a button and Dixie could climb on Kiddie Kings shoulders. My brother and I used to call it a Tiki Tower when we used it in Co op

  3. QOTW: Ive always wanted a really good Crash/Spyro team-up thats not Skylanders or in different games.

Gex and Earthworm Jim could make a good duo.

And my favorite part of Smash Bros 3 was Pikachu and Samus teaming up so maybe Master Chief and a pokemon.

  4. Curtis, awesome job. Enjoyed this episode though it seems Yooka Laylee delivered on exactly what I expected. Ups and downs of a Rare-esque N64 game.

Not crazy about the Bob worship but oh well, LaserTime podcasts are worth it.

  5. Man, who knew today would be “lets shit on rachet and clank” day!
(I still loved the episode, but that part really bothered me for some reason)

  6. Big Boss trying to to sneak around with tingle on his back. Sure, tingle could help the duo escape with his balloon/Fulton recovery device on his back, or he could keep making his goofy noises and get the duo caught and tortured at every turn.

We will call this duo, Bingle. And we will say it in the robbert loggia voice.

  7. A guest appearance by Mr. zabu_san himself? Sounds excellent!

As someone who played my fair share of Rare games back in the day, I have no interest in Yooka-Laylee. It just seems like a relic of a bygone era, which is fine if you’ve been missing that, but I haven’t been, and the gameplay I’ve seen hasn’t convinced me otherwise.

  8. No, he does not go by Randall. He finds it one of his biggest pet peeves to be called Randall, as his legal name is Randy.

…This person may or may not be me.

  9. Jeez lots or shitting on ratchet and clank. Thats still one of my favortie game series that I can easily replay.

Also come on we’ve only had a couple games be more expensive on the switch and binding of Isaac is o my 5 dollars more. It’s 35 dollars on steam for that version of the game with all the doc. And I’ll say while I love my ps4 the switch lineup has more games in the first month exclusives wise and a shit ton more for the first year compared to ps4 launch. Let’s get real killzone and knack sucked as launch titles and the first year was barren in exclusive games.

  10. This was an absolute blast to participate in, and I cannot thank Dave, Mikel, & Chis for allowing to join them.
Some of the best people on the planet allowing me to sit-in and take part in the buffoonery.

I hope everyone enjoyed the episode, and I would certainly never argue hopping on again should the stars align and allow it!
Thanks again, nerds, I love you dummies!

  11. Chris,

As for the Persona 5 victory music, that ain’t no Hammond organ. It’s an electric piano–It could be a Fender Rhodes, but it sorta has the bite of a Wurlitzer (Beck “Where It’s At” / Queen “You’re My Best Friend”) To be clear, there is some organ in there, but it’s way in the back, ( featured more prominently about 20 seconds) but the main instrument at the start of the song is 1000% not a Hammond organ.

  12. How can you knock DK64 for a collectathon then praise BOTW? BOTW is one of the biggest collectathons EVER and it was said right in the same area! NINE HUNDRED SEEDS! NINE HUNDRED. Oh and did you collect food? All the food to make potions? Or how about weapons, you collect enough of those? Or armor? Or wait don’t forget collecting those orbs at the shrines. Oh I have a quest for you, collect 5 rocks. If you collect 5 diamonds I can repair a shitty weapon for you.

Breath of the Collectawild is more accurate. I like the game but god damn the unabashed adoration for it I absolutely don’t understand.

  13. Curtis is one of the best people I’ve ever met. I hope he gets a chance to guest again!

Also, since I have been on a podcast with Curtis, I guess this makes me famous in a Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon way. Hooray!
