Vidjagame Apocalypse 222 – FIGHT LIKE APES!

With War for the Planet of the Apes hitting theaters this week, it seemed like as good a time as any to rope in Heidi Kemps of and launch our own exploration of the simian perspective with five games that let us play as hulking, violent apes instead of puny humans. We then move on to talking about Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, Gorn, Hoobastank’s frontman singing Sonic Forces’ theme song, and games you’ve finished, but wish you’d spent more time with anyway.

Question of the Week
If you could pick a musician to perform a song in a video game sequel, who and what series would it be?

Theme song by Matthew Joseph Payne. Break song is Smokey Kong Country by CapitaoRandom.

  1. I’m already on board with the week’s Top 5! Funnily enough I made a similar top 5 not too long ago, but instead all about Top 5 Apes in Fighting Games, in honor of Injustice 2’s Gorilla Grodd. Naturally despite my efforts in the video, no one watched it (sorry for the shameless plug) –

  2. season 2 of The Wolf Among Us, scored by Silent Hill’s Akira Yamaoka. i’d like to see his take on muted noir type soundtrack. and during the more horrific moments of violence he could really elevate the mood with his brand of dissonant industrial nonsense.

  3. Heidi you’re back Yay, love your comments. Wish you were on anncasts video game episode they went deep into nier and I felt you would have given some awesome thoughts on it.

  4. Stop calling apes monkeys Chris, please. I’m begging you. Monkeys have tails. Apes do not. They are not the same thing.

    1. Holy shit SO MUCH THIS. They’re completely different creatures in different groups of Primates.

It’s more complicated than just the tail issue as the mode of locomotion is different as well as their dentition (teeth). There are only a handful of ape species (chimp, bonobo, gibbons, orangutans, gorillas, us) while there are much more monkeys.

Using the term monkey/ape interchangeably is one of the most commonly and completely ignorant mistakes people make. Drives me fucking insane.

  5. QOTW – We’re long overdue for a new Tactics Ogre game, which is the series Final Fantasy Tactics essentially overtook, and a new one should finally include some music from Queen. After subtitling basically every game in the series after a Queen track, I think the franchise deserves the real thing. If Flash Gordon and The Highlander can get the Queen treatment, then surely Tactics Ogre/Ogre Battle is deserving as well.

  6. I want a sequel to Vanquish scored by a Michael Bolton soundtrack in the style of his Lonely Island song, Jack Sparrow.

  7. I remember playing the Rampage arcade game, then getting it on the NES.
Pretty simple gameplay by today’s standards, but I had a lot of fun with it.

  8. What in fuck’s sake happened to the end of this show?

Not sure who Antista was hoping to impress with his boorish “I got a blowjob from a fat girl” story, but it says more about him than I think he’d realize or own up to.

You guys wring your hands constantly about how to further the reach of the various shows on this network. I cannot say clearly enough that my reluctance to ever recommend a Lasertime network show to friends is the Russian Roulette of never knowing when Antista will cluelessly, proudly, tell a story like this and make me feel scummy for having vouched for the show to someone.

But, like the Twitter criticism he alluded to, I’m sure his measured advice is that I blow him.

  9. If Metroid Prime 4 hasn’t been scored yet, I think someone should give Battles a call! Their brand of futuristic space-rock during boss fights would give it that Doom 2016 feel the gets the kids dancing…

  10. I am so pleasantly surprised that you guys talked at length about that Netflix castlevania show. Castlevania remains my favorite gaming franchise despite the poor treatment konami has given it in the past 6 years, so i was floored by not just the quality of the animation, action and story, but by how incredibly faithful and respectful it was to the castlevania lore. (Except for that whole thing with the Catholic church, which really has nothing to do with the games… But a bunch of really cool kills came out of it,so i can’t complain too much.)

Seriously, i cannot wait for the next 8 episodes to come out. I think I’m not overreaching when i say it is easily the best tv (or even film) adaptation a videogame has ever seen.

  11. In honor of this week’s theme being about simians, my choice to score a video game sequel would be Gorillaz scoring the sequel to Crypt of the NecroDancer. It would be a beautiful EDM inspired soundtrack with hopefully some new music from the animated band.

  12. After all the jokes they made, South Park The Fractured But Whole should have Lorde perform a song. I’d say either she does a jokey song sounding like Randy or her own cover of the theme turned up 500% in her style.
