The Best New Amazon Releases: The Good Son of Godzilla

Godzilla’s biggest movie in decades joins an indie American giant monster movie and some other neat releases… this week on Amazon!

Yay, August has arrived! While it’s devoid of major holidays, you CAN celebrate some great new content! Here on LT, we have a new Laser Time about dead theme park rides, a Bonus Time featuring Bob Mackey and Henry Gilbert on Laser Time’s Patreon, as well as the run of Talking Critic starting on Talking Simpsons Patreon can get exclusive season wrap-up episodes). Meanwhile, we’ve got, um, a single game release alongside some top-notch Blu-rays. Remember, if you have Amazon Prime, you’ll score 20% off new physical game releases during their launch window. Additionally, anything you purchase after clicking one of these links will send some scratch to Laser Time… it doesn’t have to be any of the products on this page; literally ANYTHING you buy that visit helps us out. Anywho, onto the new stuff!

Aven Colony
The downside of the fall game release season being JUST around the corner is that August is kind of a dead zone. Sure, you have Madden, and occasionally a GOTY candidate like BioShock will sneak out right before the barrage of blockbuster FPS games, but mostly, August is about giving smaller games a chance. Aven Colony is exactly the kind of game that’s pefect for August. Is it perfect? Hardly, according to Metacritic. But if I ever have the time to devote a few hours to a space-set take on Sim City, you can bet it’s during the dog days of summer.

Shin Godzilla
Finally, Americans finally have an extended chance to experience the best Godzilla movie this millennium the proper way! Shin Godzilla had a criminally short run in theaters last year, and there were precious few ways to watch the professionally-subtitled movie in the time since then. For example, I watched Shin Godzilla on the back of an airplane seat since you could watch this flick on Virgin Airlines but not on any streaming platform for some weird reason. Anywho, now it’s on Blu-ray so anyone with a movie-disc player made since 2013 can now watch SG! And speaking of SG… keep an eye open for a Monday Night Movie post, coming soon!

What a week for big-ass monsters! Shin Godzilla was named one of Laser Time’s favorite 2016 movies, and Colossal also earned major props for our best of the half-year 2017 movies and shows. The movies are both about big monsters terrorizing cities in Asia, but to discuss any more of Colossal would be to ruin the surprises. As cool as the monster is in Colossal, the performances by Jason Sudekis and Anne Hathaway make Colossal unforgettable. If you have the chance, rent or buy this movie but DON’T LOOK AT THE COVER! Or read any further about it. I went in blind and it’s the best way to experience Colossal.

The Good Son
Out of all the monsters in this week’s round-up, a socipathic Kevin McCallister just might take the cake. As a pre-teen who enjoyed the first two Home Alone movies, it was a pretty big shock to see Macauly Culkin cuss as you’ll see in the classic clip below. In the long run, it was probably a bad move for MC to take such a shocking role during his very brief period of prepubescent stardom, but damn if it isn’t fun to watch Culkin fuck with Elijah Wood at every turn during The Good Son. The Blu-ray debut comes with a couple neat interview featurettes that shed some light on one of the strangest big-budget releases of the early 90s. This is a Blu-ray that isn’t to be fucked with.

Up In The Air
Last and (to be frank) least is 2009: The Movie, aka Up In The Air. We have a plot about downsizing in the wake of the 2008 recession. We have Jason Reitman, hot off his indie breakout hit Juno. We have a plot where we’re supposed to be sad that a wealthy jet-setting George Clooney can’t sustain a relationship. While it does have its charms as both Clooney and Vera Farmiglia have chemistry and Anna Kendrick proves why she’s been a Hollywood mainstay for a decade in one of her first roles, but Up in the Air has seemingly had its time, and that time was last decade. Though if you’re a big fan of Reitman, Clooney, or Kendrick, this might be worth seeking out.
