Vidjagame Apocalypse 257 – Missing Links in Localization

Big news this week – VGA is going on hiatus at the end of April. But we’ve got plenty of shows still to go, starting with this week’s, in which Heidi Kemps and Matthew Allen help us look at five Japanese games that never made it out of Japan, despite their series being popular over here. Then it’s on to Sea of Thieves, Attack on Titan 2, Assassin’s Creed Rogue Remastered, PUBG mobile, and the games that caused controversy in your own lives.

Question of the Week
With the show about to wind down for a little while, what’s been your favorite episode of VGA? (Please answer by Monday evening, Pacific time!)

  1. Qotw: my. Favorite ep was your extensive. 200th episode spectacular! Findingbout your top Was fun.

  2. With the show about to wind down for a little while, what’s been your favorite episode of VGA?

There’s tpp many to choose but the first episode is up there.
After losing Talk Radar and as much as I enjoyed Laser Time I needed my gaming podcast fix. You guys were the only gaming podcast I listened to (and still are, now that I think about it). So hearing that remixed anamanguchi theme song and hearing the familiar voices was like slipping on an old pair of shoes.
I didn’t know what an Anne Lewis was but I enjoyed her and the old gang. I can’t believe I’ve been listening to you fools since you guys first started on Talkradar.

  3. QOTW: Like Frank Drebin said on the third Naked Gun ”These aren’t farewell. We’ll just never see each other ever again.”

..which of course is not the case with this show ’cause ai believe that Mikel&co. will return with an awesome new concept or something. Hopefully hiatus will treat your body and mind well all the VGA-folks! Oh yeah the question of the week. Fave moment (a long one that is) was the Top 20 best goddamn vidjagames ever. List was well thought and the growing drunkness levels made the final entries a blast to listen.

  4. QOTW: My favorite episode of VGA was the one where Mikel came into an unexpected sum of money, but was grifted by a conman into spending it on a Monorail to connect the Laser Time Network. When hapless conductor Chris Antista had to stop an out of control monorail by utilizing an original model Xbox as an anchor I just about shit my pants – it was so exhilarating! No, but seriously I don’t really have a favorite because it’s like choosing your favorite conversation you’ve had with a group of friends. VGA is a great way for me to mellow out and pretend like I’m working at my desk on a Friday morning biding my time until Mr. Slate lets me punch-out. I’ll miss it and thanks for all of the entertainment.

  5. Surprised you guys didn’t mention Ace Attorney Investigations and the Great Ace attorney. Fans (myself included) have been bugging Capcom for both of these. RE: Mother 3. I doubt we’ll ever get it, for the same reasons you guys mentioned about Mana 3…localization. EB Beginings was already localized prior so it was just a matter of officially releasing it. M3, not so much.

  6. QOTW
My favorite episode of VGA is 151: “Playable communist”. Its my fav because not only was it the first episode of VGA i’d ever listened to it was also my first experience listening to anything by LaserTime. From there it snowballed to me listening to almost every single LaserTime podcast exclusively nowadays. I remember specifically picking 151 because that’s the last number of Gen 1 Pokemon, which is of course Mew.

  7. QOTW: Honestly, and I’ve only been “turned on man” to the LT for a few years now, but last weeks game controversy episode had me laughing my ass off so god damn hard, especially the clips of evangelicals freaking out about the pok mans

  8. QotW: My favorite episode was “Top 5 Games With Mike Myers in Them” because it’s the episode where Chris shamed me into becoming a patron! You guys took my suggestion from the comments, made a show out of it, and Chris said “this asshole gets an executive producer credit, and he’s not even a patron.” SO I righted my wrong, and think of all the fun bonus times I would have missed out on if that episode had never happened. THE SYSTEM WORKS!
Good luck, gang! Hope everything lands for everyone! Remember: MegaMan Legends is great (CHRISTOPHER).

  9. QOTW: Hey VGA! long time first time.

I really loved the Top 5 Things Ruining Games episode! I don’t remember the details but it was smart and funny and really reminded me why VGA is the only videogame podcast I listen to (besides Retronauts). But, really, every show is a delight! So, for the fans, any episode that Jaws Unleashed gets mentioned, that Chris says 420 or 69, that Millhouse says Bob Mackey, and that Michael plays the News Sound Clip twice because someone talked over it is a fave in my book.

Heartbroken about the hiatus, but rest up and come back soon. I literally can’t tell you how special this show is in one comment. Love you all. ~B

  10. Hey VGA, first time, long time.

For the QOTW, I can’t say I have a favorite episode, but anytime the topic of Heavy Rain comes up, and you guys discuss this masterpiece in your authentic “American” accents, I can’t help but laugh like a moron. Hope the little break does some good, Mikel!

  11. Mikel, thank you so much for all your hard work over the years. VGA is my favourite videogame podcast. You’ve earned a break, and I look forward to seeing your glorious return.

QOTW: It’s difficult to pick a favourite. If I had to pick only one, Episode #69: Because Butts. Anne brought a lot of fun energy to the topic that could’ve otherwise been awkward to hear about for that long!

  12. Sorry, I don’t leave comments or donate but I have really enjoyed listening to the show for just over a year now. Good luck with everything, and you’ll definitely be right back at the top of my podcast playlist whenvever you choose to return. Thank you, you all rock!

  13. I just want to say I love VGA and your work Mikel! Whatever happens in the future of VGA I’ll support it. Y’all work so hard and that is why I love this network.

  14. What do I listen to now? Of course retronauts, but where am I going to get my news on new Vijagames? Where is everyone running to ?

  15. QOTW: My favorite VGA episode would be episode 214. During the news segment, Dave brought up the idea of creating Alfred Chicken in Sonic Forces. This caused the podcast to go way off of the rails and it was glorious to listen to.

  16. Whatever happens, this is one of my favorite podcasts out there, you’ve done great work for so many years Mikel, thank you.

  17. My two favourite VGA episodes both involve Michael Grimm. The first one is the Musical Easter Eggs episode and the second one is the Pornstars in games. Both have amazing banter and jokes that keep me laughing for hours. It makes me miss Grimm even more now. Honourable mention goes to the Mike Myers games Episode with Dan Americh where I made my first video response WASTED OFF MY FUCKING MIND! I can now officially say that my favourite podcasters know what I sound like drunk.
Enjoy your break, Mikel and best of luck with your move, Chris. 🙂

  18. I love the first time you did the “True Broomers” skit with Tyler Wilde. That was early but I liked how much you riffed on all these people supposedly share all of these secrets. “True Broomers, Also true.”

  19. Sad to hear about the show, but you deserve a break! I started listening to VGA during a bit of a rough time in my life, and you guys made it a lot easier to slog through the shit. So, thank you so much for all the laughs!
I’m a bit late for the QOTW, but what the hell. I have so many favorite episodes that it’s hard to choose, but a few come to mind. Bad voice acting in games, Arcade Deviants, Horror Shmups, to name a few. I learned about a ton of weird (and so-bad-its-good) games from you guys, and it’s enriched my collection of bizarre games on my shelf. Love you guys, and best of luck!

  20. My favorite episode was every episode Mikel hosted, but AFTER that, it would be Episode 140 because the top 5 was so goofy and hilarious. My least favorite one was Episode 141 which felt really contentious for some reason.
