Haunted Westerns – Vidjagame Apocalypse 287

Red Dead Redemption 2 is out today, and if you’re looking at this instead of playing it, it’s probably safe to consider yourself our #1 fan. You’re also about to hear us talk about five classic, horror-tinged games set in the wild west, with help from MacWorld editor/genuine Texan Leif Johnson. After our dual homage to Halloween and Red Dead, we’ll touch on Return of the Obra Dinn, Soulcalibur VI, Fallout 76 bug warnings, and the console startup sounds of your dreams.

Question of the Week:
If you were stuck in a haunted version of the Old West, what would be your ideal weapon for keeping the undead hordes at bay?

  1. QotW: If I were stuck in the haunted old west, my ideal weapon would be the BFG9000, because I don’t play by the rules, and I can kill anyone and anything

  2. QOTW: I’d spin the mystery box a few times and hope for a Wonder Weapon. I’ll probably get stuck with Winter’s Howl, but I can always hope for the Ray Gun.

  3. Chris started out doing a Pat Buttram voice, then switched to Walter Brennan after he said it was Walter Brennan. Pat was in Robin Hood and other Disney movies, along with lots of westerns, and is one of the old-timers in the Back to the Future 3 saloon. Dub Taylor was also in the saloon, Chris sounds like him, too. Walter Brennan was also in a lot of westerns, but not in BttF 3, and all the guys have good western voices that Chris does good impressions of, but he tends to mix the voices together.

  4. A horse, but not any horse. Specifically the Second Horse of the Apocalypse from Undead Nightmare, War! This is a horse that has nearly infinite stamina, is extremely fast, and LIGHTS EVERY ENEMY IT TOUCHES ON FIRE! Finally, as icing on the cake, its a fucking horse, and as medieval warfare taught us, you can win battles by just riding people down. Screw being a rider on a pale horse, give me War! Let loose the horse of War!

  5. A long lightsaber (I’m assuming that lightsabers don’t run out of fuel) seems ideal when dealing with undead hordes since you don’t need to be very technically skilled for it to be effective.

Bonus points: you can use it to find freshwater by striking into the ground at various points and roast meat if you don’t know how to make a fire. It can even warm you up in the cold desert nights.

    Now I want a lightsaber in my day-to-day life…

  6. QotW: I’m gonna pit my history degree to use and say the Winchester Model 1895. It was one of the most used military riffles in the late 1890’s and through World War 1. It’s accurate, can chamber a host of different ammo cartridges, and is relatively fast firing.

  7. If I have the option of swiping a weapon from another game I’d go with the Vampire Killer from the Castlevania games. I figure a whip would be incognito enough in that setting and leaves me a free hand to still wield a pistol or some form or religious paraphernalia should that be effective.

If lore gets in the way of that then Maybe the Alucard Spear from bloodlines or the “Udead Killer” from some obscure ass light novel that never came to the states.

    1. Regardless of what weapon I use I will totally wreck shop to a whistled (ala the wild arms opening) cover of vampire killer.

  8. If I was stuck in a haunted version of the old west my ideal weapon would be a human Shield. because fuck that guy, he knows what he did

  9. I guess to fight hordes you need a weapon that gets crowds. Most likely the fart powers from Stick of Truth or the Fractured But Whole, as you can simply light. it. up.

  10. I heard a Rockstar employee listens to this show and has sent you guys a few contact messages but has not heard back. Bet he could help with your RDR2 not-having problem.
