With PC Gamer’s Tyler Wilde in attendance, let’s take a look at some of 2019’s best playable April Fool’s “jokes,” after which we’ll dig into the Borderlands 3 reveal, the Genesis Mini, and the game characters you’d like to play as in their twilight years.

  1. QotW: The best April Joke I fell for was the infamous Sheng Long one from EGM, and when site ran a story claiming MK vs. Street Fighter was coming out. Conversely, when DC vs MK was leaked on April Fool’s Day, I thought it was bullshit…wish I was right about it in retrospect.

  2. QotW: I fell for that Sonic and Tails in Melee prank from EGM. I got through 4 in Cruel melee. My friend was able to get through the full “requirements.” Still annoyed at all the wasted time.

  3. QotW: The screenshot of Kazuya in Tekken 3. Tried all perfect runs of every character, Winning the second round (or third) fight with a “GREAT!, and any other strange condition i could think of to unlock something. I’m pretty sure I gave up long before discovering it was a hoax. LIttle did I know Kazuya would come back in 4.

  4. I was in university halls in 2000 and my girlfriend at the time had gone back home for the weekend. I rang her at just before midnight from my mobile, waking her up and told her that our friend Oli, had been arrested. The story was that he had got stoned in his room and set off the fire alarm, causing the halls to be evacuated. When the fire department came, they found scales and a load of baggies in his room and knew he was dealing drugs, so called the police. He had been taken off to the local police station.
After telling her this, we went outside to a phone box and Oli called her, saying it was his one call from jail and reiterated the story.
My girlfriend called another friend, who lived in the hall by the way, and had not been dragged out of bed by the fire alarm that had never gone off, and asked her to bail Oli out. We caught this friend heading off to the police, we didn’t know this.
As midnight rolled round, and April 1st began, we rang her again from the phone box and about 20 people who were in on this shouted “April Fools” down the phone at her.
She had been in bed ill since she had got home. She told me we would talk about what had happened when she got back.
I am no longer with this girlfriend and never did find out what happened to the girl who head down to the police office at midnight, she wouldn’t tell us.

  5. My favorite video game April Fools joke was way back around 2003 or 2004 when Blizzard announced that they were adding a Panda race as a playable faction to Warcraft 3. The joke itself wasn’t playable at first, but then they actually did add the Pandaran Brewmaster as a mercenary hero I think later that year. Fast forward however many years, and now the Pandaran are a playable race in World of Warcraft and there are two Pandaran heroes in Heroes of the Storm.

  6. I feel like I have to urge Chris to keep at Sekiro. I get the instinct to put it down. It’s one of the most frustrating games I’ve ever played, for sure. It’s also one of the most counter intuitive for me. However, I would argue that isn’t a bad thing. After banging my head against the wall for hours stubbornly wanting to tackle the game on my own I caved, and I’m so glad did. FromSoftware games have encouraged people to reach out to the community for years, and this one is no different.
VaatiVidya has the best beginners guide to the game I’ve seen so far:

  7. QotW: The one I fell for because I think I was blinded by being a fan of Zelda, was when IGN posted a video for A legend of Zelda movie a long time ago.
It didn’t look too bad with all other video game movies being a bit poor at the time. It looked like Nintendo had learned to love film again and anything, anything would have been better than the Mario Bros film.

And then the release date popped up at the end and hopes were dashed
