Playing Doctor – Vidjagame Apocalypse 360

This week’s VGA pays tribute to the world’s embattled health-care professionals the only way we know how: By talking about five games that let you play as one, with help from Leif Johnson of MacWorld. Then it’s onward to Doom Eternal, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Half-Life: Alyx, and who you’re siding with in the next-gen console wars.

Question of the Week: How have home lockdowns affected your gameplay habits? Are you playing more, less, clearing out backlog, or playing more of one system than others? Let us know.

  1. man, I wish Atlus would revisit the Trauma Center series. With what the switch can do with HD rumble, gyroscopes…would make for interesting stuff, a better version of the Wii game. Was a little surprised we didn’t at least get a 3DS remake.

  2. QotW: my gaming habits are more less the same, though with different systems since I’ve been working from home. I usually played my Switch on my hour long commutes . Now, since I don’t have to go anywhere, I’m sleeping in and playing a little before work and still at lunch. However I’m now clearing out some Steam backlog in the new free time after work. I’m also able to stay up later and work on my extensive Xbox One backlog.

  3. QoftW: Thanks to the current situation I am now out of work and now I have lots of free time! There isn’t much to do in my house, and my state’s non-essential businesses are closed, so my video game backlog has definitely gotten more attention. I managed to complete Ghostbusters: Remastered on PS4, finished up 3D Dot Heroes on PS3, and now working on Uncharted: Lost Legacy in the past month. Seeing as I spent 75% of my gaming in 2019 putting 200+ hours in Witcher 3, I’d say that’s an improvement. I’ve decided to use my new free time to chip away at the smaller entries on my backlog until my FF7 Remake copy (hopefully) arrives on time. Hitting my backlog has been a healthy escape from the news and the endless Facebook memes. I’m single, stuck at home, miles from any friends, so might as well hit my backlog like my teenage years. I’ve even got the 2 liter sodas and frozen pizzas ready.

  4. QotW: My gaming habits have increase since this all started. I started working remotely this week and it has not helped my animal crossing addiction. Instead of getting up a hour later due to not needing to commute I am using that time to harvest and fossil find. I am also grabbing my switch during my lunch breaks. After work I have been ripping and tearing through Doom which like Chris it took me a few missions to like but now I cant stop. The one silver lining to this whole stay at home situation is my friends have been talking about starting up a online game together which we haven’t done in years. By the time you are reading this I will be playing Divinity: Original Sin 2 for the first time while talking to my friends through discord. Brings me back to late Friday night League of Legends binges.

Hey VGA gang, I’ve been listening for a long time and decided this year I was going to push myself to start posting. I finally have zero excuses during this NYC lock-down!

While I don’t actively feel super anxious, my gameplay habits have turned into stress eating video games. Dark Souls Remastered felt like it was giving me a big-old hug, and I couldn’t snap out of it. I was glued to it for 3 days platinum’ing it… again. Good thing time was an old world construct, and now nothing matters!
I devoured Doom eternal as well- That was striking the perfect balance of giving me some old school nostalgia feels with some very well executed new mechanics. Pure comfort food.

Sorry for the long post- But I wanted to thank you guys, Mikel, Chris and Matty-Allen for keeping VGA going. I popped in from Retronauts after hearing Mikel and Chris on different episodes, and got hooked by all you charming fellas. Let’s bring Anne and/or Tyler back during VGA Quarantime!

Thanks for getting me through some boring times, some very bad times, and being the ear candy I needed to get back into the gym. I was down 30 pounds and going strong – until the gym became a virus filled hell hole.

Also: I know it’s way too late, but I’ve got to throw in Ghost Trick (2010) as my decade underdog.
