Enhanced for Sega CD – Vidjagame Apocalypse 506

The Sega CD (or Mega-CD) turned 32(!) last month, and it remains the home not just of questionable FMV games and music-video makers, but of some of the best and weirdest versions of 16-bit games that were popular on other consoles at the time. Along with Greg Moore, we’ll delve into five ancient games that got unforgettably “upgraded” with speech and FMV cutscenes, after which we’ll talk about Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider, Borderlands movie news, the alleged end of PS5 shortages, and the upcoming games you’re most looking forward to this year.

Question of the Week: What’s a game you’d like to see “enhanced” by full-motion video or voiceovers?

  1. QOTW: I’m with Chris in that games have to hook me with gameplay before I will ever care about story. In fact, I went through a phase where I could not get into any game where the protagonists talked, especially if they had a southern accent. If I was going to adjust the amount of voice acting and cut scenes to improve one game, I’d turn the guy from Final Fantasy X into a silent protagonist. I’d also make him not be a water soccer player. To answer the actual question asked? I dunno. Maybe give me a cut scene for all the characters in Mean Bean Machine?

  2. I can’t say a specific game I would want this for but more games doing what Cult Of The Lamb does. I feel like they nailed the fake voices with the atmosphere of the game keeping the dialog funny or interesting but still short. Also every time I see the tarot card guy I have to do an impression back to him cause his voices is pure sex.

  3. QOTW: the Civilization series has voice over for when you unlocked a new technology or something similar you get some contemporary quote, first with Leonard Nimoy RIP and now with Sean Bean. I think they should for the next do a FMV with Sean Bean in a costume appropriate for the era, reading the quote to camera like a Shakespearean couplet. I think it would fit in perfectly with the sense of humor for the series.

  4. QOTW: Let me get 90’s era compressed FMV cut scenes for Stardew Valley! Every time you launch into a conversation a window pops up with a poorly acted interaction with tinny audio. I’m getting a nostalgic high just thinking about it! Please consider a deep dive series on the Wing Commander series, it happens to be one of my favorites, and hearing you guys discuss it was so entertaining. You all deserve the Terran Confederation Inter-Congressional Medal of Honor (often referred to as the Pewter Planet) for how great the show always is! Many thanks from a grateful listener.

  5. QOTW: Honestly, I would love a return to the cheesy FMVs featured in the original Resident Evil. Even if they were just paid DLC I’d love to have them in the new games.

    1. I honestly surprised I haven’t seen a QOTW response from LT’s resident thirst-poster.
